Unemployment benefit is what a Section 33 insured person receives after leaving a job, to cover expenses while looking for the next one. The amount depends on three things: why the employment ended, the wage on which contributions were paid, and how many months have been contributed.
The figure to get right is the dismissal rate, which rose from 50% to 60% on 28 June 2025 under Ministerial Regulation No. 2 (2025). Many articles and even some official summaries still carry the old number, so people who are dismissed routinely underestimate what they are owed. The resignation rate was not changed and remains 30%.
How it works
Step 1 — check entitlement. At least 6 monthly contributions are required within the 15 months before unemployment; they need not be consecutive. Dismissal for a reason under Section 78 (2) — dishonesty, intentionally damaging the employer, seven consecutive working days of absence, and others — removes entitlement altogether.
Step 2 — find the daily wage. Under Section 57, take the highest three months of contribution-base wages within the fifteen months before the month of entitlement, add them together and divide by ninety. Note the window is 15 months, not 9 — the 9-month figure comes from the pre-2015 wording that has since been repealed.
Step 3 — apply the rate. Dismissal pays 60% of the daily wage for up to 180 days per claim. Resignation or the end of a fixed-term contract pays 30% for up to 90 days.
The ceiling matters. The calculation base is capped at the contribution ceiling, currently 17,500 baht a month. Someone earning 30,000 or 50,000 receives exactly what someone on 17,500 receives: 350 baht a day, or 10,500 baht a month, after dismissal. The ceiling rises to 20,000 baht in 2029 and 23,000 baht in 2032.
The dates that quietly cost people money. The first seven days after unemployment are unpaid; entitlement starts on day 8. You must register as unemployed within 30 days. Registering later does not remove entitlement, but benefit then runs only from the registration date — the earlier period is gone and cannot be claimed back. After that, report to the employment office at least once a month.
Frequently asked questions
Do I get anything if I resigned?
Yes, but much less and for much less time. Resignation or the end of a fixed-term contract pays 30% of the daily wage for up to 90 days per claim, against 60% for up to 180 days after dismissal.
I earn 40,000 baht — what will I receive?
The same as someone earning 17,500 baht, because the base is capped at the contribution ceiling. After dismissal that is 350 baht a day, or 10,500 baht a month, however much more you actually earned.
I registered more than 30 days late — is it lost?
Entitlement is not lost, but benefit runs only from the registration date. The stretch between when it should have started and when you registered cannot be claimed retroactively, so the sooner you register the better.
Why do other sites say 50% when this page says 60%?
Because the rate was recently raised. Ministerial Regulation No. 2 (2025) on unemployment benefit changed the dismissal case from 50% to 60% with effect from 28 June 2025. Anything written before then still carries the old figure.
What if I find a job while receiving benefit?
Entitlement ends the day you start work as a Section 33 insured person again. Notify the office and stop reporting. Continuing to draw benefit after starting work is receiving money you are not entitled to and it must be repaid.
I lost two jobs in the same year — do I get a full new entitlement?
Not a full new one. Where more than one claim is made in the same calendar year, the combined days must not exceed the cap for that reason: 180 days where any dismissal claim is involved, 90 days where all claims are resignations. If a year ends below the cap, the remaining days can continue into the following year.
