Compare yearly energy and maintenance costs of an electric car and a petrol car from your real mileage, charging rate and fuel price, then find the payback on the price difference.
How it works
Fuel a year = distance ÷ economy × fuel price. Energy bought = distance × kWh per 100 km ÷ 100 ÷ charging efficiency; charging cost = energy × average rate. Yearly saving = (fuel + petrol maintenance) − (charging + EV maintenance). Payback = price premium ÷ yearly saving.
Hand check: 10,000 km a year at 10 km per litre and THB 30 fuel costs THB 30,000. An EV using 15 kWh per 100 km at 100% efficiency needs 1,500 kWh; at THB 4 that is THB 6,000, saving THB 24,000 a year. A THB 48,000 premium pays back in 2 years and 5 years saves THB 72,000 net.
Resale value, insurance, road tax, battery replacement, charger installation and unentered incentives are excluded. Public charging usually costs more than home charging, so use an average weighted by where you charge. Use the car ownership tool to include every cost.
Frequently asked questions
What charging rate should I use?
For home charging, use your bill's average rate or the off-peak TOU rate. For public stations, use the provider's price per kWh, then average by how much you use each.
Why include charging efficiency?
Some energy is lost as heat while charging, so you pay for slightly more than reaches the battery.
Is it worth it if I drive little?
The less you drive, the smaller the yearly saving and the longer the payback. Lower the distance to see the effect.
