How it works
Each month, interest on a debt = balance × annual rate ÷ 12. All minimums are paid first; whatever remains of the total budget (all minimums + extra) goes to the chosen target. Avalanche sorts by highest rate, snowball by smallest balance. When a debt is cleared, its minimum rolls to the next target. The comparison pays each minimum only, with no extra and no rollover.
Hand check: THB 1,000 at 0% with a THB 100 minimum and THB 2,000 at 24% with a THB 100 minimum, plus THB 800 extra, pays THB 1,000 a month. Avalanche clears both in 4 months with THB 68.06 interest; snowball also takes 4 months but pays THB 102.38.
Simple monthly interest is used; real cards and loans accrue daily by statement cycle. Real card minimums are often a percentage of the balance and fall as it falls. Fees, penalties, refinancing and consolidation are excluded. Contact your lender or a debt clinic if you cannot meet minimum payments.
Frequently asked questions
How do avalanche and snowball differ?
Avalanche usually minimises total interest. Snowball clears the first debt sooner, which can help motivation. Switch the option to compare both.
Why does the monthly total stay the same after a debt is cleared?
The method rolls a cleared debt's minimum into the next target. Reducing the total would lengthen the plan and raise interest.
What if a minimum does not cover interest?
That balance will not fall. The tool asks for higher payments if the plan does not finish within 50 years, and hides interest saved when the minimum-only case never ends.
