Thai cheques, receipts, tax invoices and contracts require the amount to be written out in Thai words alongside the figures, as a safeguard against a digit being altered. If you have to sign or issue one of these in Thailand and do not write Thai numerals fluently, this converts the amount for you, correctly spelled and ready to copy.
The output stays in Thai script, because that is what the document requires. What this page translates is the explanation, not the result.
How it works
How Thai numbers are constructed. Thai counts in the same base-ten structure as English, with words for ten (สิบ), hundred (ร้อย), thousand (พัน), ten thousand (หมื่น), hundred thousand (แสน) and million (ล้าน). Note that Thai has distinct single words for ten thousand and hundred thousand, where English has to compound them — this is the part that most often trips up learners.
Two irregularities that catch people out.
First, "one" in the ones place after a ten becomes เอ็ด rather than หนึ่ง. Eleven is สิบเอ็ด, not สิบหนึ่ง. Twenty-one is ยี่สิบเอ็ด. This applies at every scale: 101 is หนึ่งร้อยเอ็ด.
Second, twenty uses ยี่สิบ, not สองสิบ. This irregularity applies only to twenty; thirty is สามสิบ as you would expect.
Amounts above a million repeat the ล้าน unit. Ten million is สิบล้าน, and a hundred million is ร้อยล้าน. There is no separate word equivalent to "billion" — it is constructed by continuing the pattern.
Baht and satang. One baht is 100 satang. A whole amount ends in บาทถ้วน, where ถ้วน means exactly, signalling that no satang follow — the equivalent of writing "and 00/100" or "only" on a cheque. An amount with satang ends in สตางค์ instead.
Where you will actually need this. Cheques require it, and a mismatch between the figures and the words normally makes the words prevail. Tax invoices and receipts commonly include it. Contracts, particularly property and employment contracts, state amounts in both forms. If you are signing a Thai contract, it is worth checking that the written amount matches the figures before you sign.
Frequently asked questions
Why do Thai documents need the amount in words?
For the same reason cheques do in most countries: figures can be altered by adding a digit, while written words cannot easily be changed. Where the two disagree on a Thai cheque, the written words normally take precedence, which is why it is worth checking them before signing.
What does บาทถ้วน mean?
ถ้วน means exactly or even, so บาทถ้วน marks a whole number of baht with no satang — the equivalent of "and 00/100" or "only" on an English cheque. An amount that does include satang ends in สตางค์ instead.
Why is 11 สิบเอ็ด rather than สิบหนึ่ง?
Thai uses a special form, เอ็ด, for "one" in the ones place when it follows a larger unit. So 11 is สิบเอ็ด, 21 is ยี่สิบเอ็ด, and 101 is หนึ่งร้อยเอ็ด. Writing สิบหนึ่ง is a recognisable error. Twenty is similarly irregular: ยี่สิบ rather than สองสิบ.
Can I use this for a cheque?
Yes. The output follows standard Thai conventions and can be copied directly. Write it in the words line exactly as shown, and check it matches the figures — in a dispute the words are what count.
