How it works

Monthly invoices = (target take-home + business costs + insurance and savings) ÷ (1 − tax reserve). Hourly rate = invoices ÷ billable hours; day rate = hourly × hours per day. When a juristic-person client withholds 3% on service fees, cash received = invoices × 97%; the withheld amount is credited in your annual return.

Example: a THB 40,000 take-home target plus THB 5,000 costs and THB 3,000 insurance and savings is THB 48,000. With a 5% tax reserve you need THB 50,526.32 of invoices. Over 100 billable hours that is THB 505.26 an hour or THB 4,042.11 a day. After 3% withholding you receive THB 49,010.53.

The tax reserve is an estimate; actual tax is annual and depends on income type, deductible expenses and allowances. Withholding tax is a prepayment, not an extra cost. VAT is excluded if you are VAT-registered. Billable hours are usually fewer than hours worked.

Frequently asked questions

How many billable hours should I enter?

Count only hours clients pay for, excluding finding work, sales calls, unpaid revisions and admin. Many freelancers bill about half to two-thirds of their working time.

Do I still file tax after 3% withholding?

Yes, file your annual return as usual. Withheld tax is credited; any excess can be refunded and any shortfall must be paid.

Why include insurance and savings?

Freelancers have no employer paying into social security or a provident fund, so rates must cover these benefits.
