Work out revenue, cost and profit per rai for rice or field crops from yield, selling price, moisture deduction and itemised costs, plus the break-even price and yield.

How it works

Weight sold = area × yield per rai × (1 − deduction). Revenue = weight sold × price per kg. Total cost = all per-rai costs × area. Profit = revenue − cost. Break-even price = total cost ÷ weight sold. Break-even yield = cost per rai ÷ (price × (1 − deduction)).

Example: 10 rai yielding 600 kg per rai at THB 10 per kg with no deduction earns THB 60,000. Costs of THB 5,000 per rai total THB 50,000, leaving THB 10,000 profit or THB 1,000 per rai. Break-even is THB 8.33 per kg or 500 kg per rai. THB 10 per kg equals THB 10,000 per tonne.

Prices and costs in the fields are examples, not today's market. Mills may apply their own moisture tables. Unpaid family labour, interest, machinery depreciation, government support and crop insurance are excluded.

Frequently asked questions

How do I enter a price per tonne?

Divide by 1,000 for the price per kg: THB 9,500 per tonne = THB 9.50 per kg.

Should I include my own labour?

For cash profit, include only wages actually paid. To compare with other work, add your own labour to see the economic profit.

What is break-even yield for?

It shows risk: if drought or disease pushes yield below this level, you lose money even at the same price.
