Work out the dividend tax credit under section 47 bis and compare including dividends in your annual return with keeping the 10% withholding as final tax, to see which refunds more or costs less.
How it works
Under section 47 bis, credit = dividend × the company's tax rate ÷ (100 − that rate); at 20% the credit is 20/80 of the dividend. If you include dividends, add the dividend and credit to income, apply the progressive rates, then subtract the credit and the 10% withheld. Section 48(3) lets residents keep 10% as final tax instead. The tool compares the extra tax each way.
Hand check: THB 80,000 of dividends from a company taxed at 20% carries a THB 20,000 credit. With no other income and THB 60,000 allowances, net income is THB 40,000 and untaxed, so you recover the THB 8,000 withheld plus the THB 20,000 credit, THB 28,000. In the 35% bracket the extra tax is THB 35,000, or THB 15,000 after the credit, more than the THB 8,000 of the 10% option.
For Thai residents receiving dividends from Thai companies. If you include dividends, all dividends in that tax year must be included. Dividends paid from tax-exempt profits, such as BOI-promoted business, may carry no credit. The 0.5% minimum tax under section 48(2) and spouse income are not modelled.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I find the company's tax rate?
The paying company states on the withholding certificate which tax rate the profits bore. If it says exempt or no credit, enter 0.
Why do low-bracket taxpayers get more back?
The credit reflects tax the company already paid. If your personal rate is below the company rate, the difference comes back as a refund.
Must every dividend be included?
If you choose to include, all dividends received that year must be included, so total them first and work out credits at each company's rate.
