Estimate upload or download duration from file size and connection speed. Choose decimal or binary file units and adjust usable throughput.

How it works

Convert the selected file size to bytes, then multiply by eight for bits. Effective bits per second = Mbps × 1,000,000 × usable throughput / 100. Seconds = bits / effective rate. MB/GB are decimal; MiB/GiB are binary.

Example: a 1 GB file (1,000,000,000 bytes) on a 100 Mbps connection at 80% usable throughput transfers at 80 Mbps and takes about 100 seconds, or 1 minute 40 seconds.

This is not a speed test and does not access your files. Server limits, Wi-Fi and other traffic can increase the duration. Use your upload rate when sending files.

Frequently asked questions

How do Mbps and MB/s differ?

Mbps means megabits per second; MB/s means megabytes per second. Eight bits make a byte, so 10 MB/s equals 80 Mbps before overhead.

Why do 1 GB and 1 GiB take different times?

One GB has 1,000,000,000 bytes; one GiB has 1,073,741,824 bytes, so the latter contains more data.
